Ebb and Flow

French translation below

Dear Friends,
Back in the early 1990’s, I was going through a phase of in my life when I felt creatively stuck.  My ability to deliver sermons/homilies extemporarily was thrown into a little bit of a crisis and I remember the struggle to find inspiring material for sermons and articles was exhausting.
Some months into this period of stuckness, I was back in Ireland in May to celebrate my birthday.  I drove myself to one of my favourite places on the west coast of Ireland, the Silver Strand Beach, on the outskirts of the city of Galway.  It was around 8pm at night, and I took a walk along the beach, heading further up north to the coastline of Connemara.  I sat down on some rocks for a while and looked out towards the sea. There was the evening sun going down on the horizon before me………..in the distance the blue sea became silver and I was reminded of some of the words of Rimbaud (late 19th Century French poet) entitled ‘Eternity – It has been found again.  What? – Eternity.  It is the sea fled away with the sun!’  As I sat there, looking out to the Atlantic Ocean, watching the sun go down over the sea I had the experience of being at one with all the wonder and beauty of the earth before me…………the rock I was sitting on, the sand underneath my feet, the ebb and flow of the silvery waves before me, the sky looking as if it was touching the sea way out into the ocean.  I sat there for ages – the earth, the sea, the sky – were showing me something……….they were my Spiritual Teachers.  Mother Earth, the Cosmos – this is the wonder and ongoing presence of the Universal God.  Since that particular night, I have never had the experience of being creatively blocked for long periods again.  When I do feel temporarily creatively blocked, I call the picture of this experience to mind and my creativity flows again………….in psycho spiritual psychotherapy we call this practice ‘resourcing.’
On Saturday November 2nd, we will have our Farewell Service for Susan, our much loved Lay Minister.  Susan has had a ten year journey with us as a very active member of our Church Community and in these last years as our Lay Minister.  We all have many rich and happy memories of Susan’s time with us and guess what, we will have many more when she returns to Prague for her visits to the Czech Unitarian Academy and to spend some time with us.  I am reminded of some words of John O’Donohue when I reflect on Susan’s time with us ‘Each person brings sound out of silence and coaxes the invisible to become visible.’  Thank you Susan.
Since Susan formally announced her leaving, both your Board and I have been in discussion about who might join us in our professional ministry.  Some months ago, I had an intuitive sense of someone who would fit our community well in the professional ministry.  I am reminded of some more words by John O’Donohue ‘To be spontaneous is to escape the cage of the ego by trusting that which is beyond the self.’   So I made the approach and we met with the person I had in mind.  Your Board and  I are pleased to announce that from January 2nd, we will be joined by the Rev Iva Fišerová.  Some of you who were at the service on Saturday October 5th will have met Iva already.  Simon and I have known Iva for 15 years +.  Iva has served our Prague Czech speaking congregation as a member in many different roles, before she trained for the professional ministry at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago.  Iva’s grandmother was one of the original members of the Czech Unitarian Congregation during the time of Rev Norbert Capek.  Iva has been involved in the Unitarian and Unitarian Universalist international scene for many years.
Susan, we are already looking forward to more happy experiences with you.  Iva, welcome amongst our beloved community.
In Faith and with love,
Mark

Chers amis,

Mark
